Second Sight CEO to Talk Bionics, Wearable Tech

Just like smartphones and tablets, it seems that wearable technology is set to explode. Indeed, according to a recent report from ABI Research, the wearable technology market will grow to reach 485 million units in annual device shipments by 2018.

For some, this may seem borderline ridiculous, but isn't that the very same attitude many held toward smartphones only a few years ago? Besides, wearable technology encompasses a much broader range of possible applications. It may seem that consumer-focused devices like Google Glass are the be all and end all of wearable technology, but companies like Second Sight are also bringing exciting tech to market that may change the way some people view the world — literally.

Second Sight's Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, which received FDA approval earlier this year, uses a combination of implanted and wearable technology to restore sight to individuals with late stage Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). This is done by providing electrical stimulation to the retina, inducing visual perception. Obviously, this has the potential to change the lives of those currently unable to see anything but, at most, extremely bright lights.

Those interested in learning more may be interested to learn that Dr. Robert Greenberg, CEO of second sight and key developer of the Argus II System, will be participating in a fireside chat with TMC CEO and editor in chief Rich Tehrani at the upcoming Wearable Tech Expo, being held July 24-25 at the Kimmel Center at New York University, in New York City. Greenberg will be discussing the past, present and future of bionics in professional healthcare.

"Bionics are the ultimate expression of wearable technology that today are restoring hearing to the deaf and sight to the blind," said Greenberg in a statement. "I'm looking forward to bringing this discussion to the Wearable Tech Conference audience."

The rest of the Wearable Tech Expo agenda covers a broad range of cutting-edge technology from industry leaders, providing an accurate picture of how this new technological trend will affect daily life around the world in the near future.
