Recon Jet Available for Pre-Order at a Special Price

It's hard to top the buzz that Google has created with Glass, but the Recon Jet system proves it's not necessary to do so. Like Google Glass, the Recon Jet, which recently became available for pre-order, is a pair of glasses with technology enhancements but it differs from Google's offering in a few key ways.

First of all, as Matthew Miller of ZDNet points out, the Jet are sunglasses and as such aren't meant to be worn all the time. This is a big sticking point for many that don't want to invite stares while out in public, and the Jet sidesteps the issue completely.

More importantly, though, is price: the Jet are available for $499 until July 21 as part of a special pre-launch sale, after which point they'll be $599. Compared to Glass' current price tag of $1,500, as well as its limited availability and it's easy to see the Jet carving out a nice niche in the market.

Google seems to realize that the Jet and Glass aren't at odds as well, since Recon first introduced the Jet earlier this year at the Google I/O conference.

The Recon Jet glasses feature a bevy of sensors – nine-axis sensors, a 3D accelerometer and gyroscope, and an altimeter, as well as pressure and temperature sensors — allowing them to capture various types of data without needing to be connected to other devices. That said, they do come with standard connectivity options, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and ANT+ for athletic tracking gear.

Information is conveyed to the wearer via a 16:9 WQVGA display, while the whole experience is powered by a one gigahertz dual-core processor, one gigabyte of RAM and eight gigabytes of flash storage.

Meanwhile, the Jet's battery should provide between four and six hours of continuous use, but the battery is removable, so the glasses are capable of supporting longer sessions.
