Nuance Lends Voice Tech to Samsung Galaxy Gear

Samsung’s new smartwatch — officially announced Wednesday alongside the company’s new pocket-stretching phablet, the Galaxy Note 3 — was a poorly kept secret. The Korean electronics giant has been pretty open about the device, called the Samsung Galaxy Gear, for some time, as well as the rest of its wearable tech lineup, which includes computerized clothing.

And yet, there are always new details that can only be discovered during the official announcement. This is especially true for Samsung as the company likes to include unique software features in its new devices.

In the case of the Galaxy Gear, as well as the Note 3, it seems new voice and language capabilities will play a prominent role, thanks to technology from Nuance Communications. Nuance has been lending its voice and language technology to Samsung devices since S-Voice first made its appearance on the Galaxy S3, but the Galaxy Gear is special as it marks the first time Nuance’s systems-based technology has appeared in a wearable device.

Nuance’s voice technology is meant to provide an intuitive and natural interface that learns and adapts to user preference. Indeed, the use of voice commands will allow users to navigate the Galaxy Gear effortlessly.

Meanwhile, for Nuance itself, the Galaxy Gear is part of a larger expansion of Nuance Cloud Services.

“Samsung Galaxy Gear and the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will change how people stay connected. And through the power of voice, people are able to effortlessly and intuitively engage this new paradigm of wearable technology,” said Michael Thompson, executive vice president and general manager of Nuance Mobile. “The reality of wearable voice input that understands, learns, anticipates and adapts is now here.”

The Samsung Galaxy Gear is an important device for the wearable technology market as it represents a leading manufacturer’s first effort at consumer-focused wearable technology.
