Illinois Could Ban Driving While Using Google Glass

Everyone knows that you’re not supposed to drink and drive or text and drive, but if a proposed law passes in Illinois, drivers in the Land of Lincoln will be prohibited from using Google Glass and driving too, according to the Associated Press.

Illinois state Senate Democrat Ira Silverstein has introduced the proposed legislation.

"It's just another way people will be distracted," he told Lee Enterprises newspapers. "People's attention to the road should not be interrupted."

While Google’s device has been one of the most coveted in the tech field, only available to a select few, it hasn’t been well received in some quarters. In addition to possible privacy violations, politicians and police officers are seeing it as a potential safety risk, especially while driving.

One Google Glass-equipped motorist, Cecilia Abadie, who was pulled over for speeding in San Diego, California. A California Highway Patrol officer noticed the device and cited him for using a video device while driving in addition to the speeding ticket. The driver plead guilty to both charges in traffic court.

The ban on using Google Glass will be tacked onto another bill banning the use of cellphones while driving. The ban on using phones will take effect on Jan 1, 2014.

Google spokeswoman Anna Richardson White said that Google Glass users should use their own judgment and make safety a priority.

"More broadly, Glass is built to connect you more with the world around you, not distract you from it," she said.

Only time will tell if devices like Google Glass really are a distraction while driving. If the ban passes, it could mean that state legislatures will be willing to stop a problem from the outset instead of waiting for people to be hurt before passing laws against using cellphones and texting while driving.
