Nokia Smartwatch May Leverage 'Morph' Tech for an Innovative Experience

Whether or not you’re convinced that smartwatches have major significance in the wearable tech space, it seems many smartphone manufacturers are. Sony and Samsung, for example, have already released smartwatches this year — the SmartWatch 2 and Galaxy Gear, respectively — while others are rumored to follow in their footsteps. There are some manufacturers, however, that don’t seem content to merely follow the trend.

Take Nokia, for example: The company’s rumored smartwatch, which isn’t expected to see a release until the latter half of 2014, is rumored to use Morph technology to provide a unique wearable tech experience.

‘Morph’ was first launched as a joint nanotechnology concept between the Nokia Research Center (NRC) and the University of Cambridge back in early 2008. Earlier this year, Nokia applied for a patent on the technology. According to the company, Morph “will potentially create a world of radically different devices that open up an entirely new spectrum of possibilities.”

In the case of Nokia’s rumored smartwatch, this spectrum of possibilities may revolve around ‘kinetic tech’ — at least based on a Morph concept video. In other words, the watch may be controlled in part through movements like bending, twisting and squeezing. It might sound a little crazy, but it also sounds ideal for a smartwatch. After all, simply squeezing the entire device rather than hunting for a specific button seems like a legitimate time saver.

That all said, this is merely rumor and speculation; there’s no hard evidence to suggest that the Nokia smartwatch will deviate beyond what we’ve seen from similar devices so far.

Still, it would be nice to see such dramatic innovation pop up so soon in the young wearable tech market. Meanwhile, Nokia could sure use a clear differentiator to break into the space, especially since it has fallen from grace in the smartphone space in recent years.
