Sony May Unveil a New Smartwatch at CES 2014

Sony hasn’t quite cracked the smartwatch market yet, despite the fact that the SmartWatch 2, released in October, is able to do some things Samsung’s moderately popular Galaxy Gear can’t — like pair with a far broader range of Android phones, for example. However, the Japanese electronics giant apparently hasn’t let this deter it from wearable tech as it apparently has another smartwatch already in the works for 2014.

According to a recent FCC filing, the device is currently being referred to as a “BT Wrist Notifier” with the model number SWR10. Unfortunately, that’s about all we have right now as far as details go. It’s a safe bet to assume, however, that this new smartwatch will build on the SmartWatch 2’s waterproof design and 1.6-inch 220x176-pixel resolution display at least somewhat.

So far, in the smartphone space, Sony has relied pretty heavily on appealing to consumers with top-of-the-line specs within attractive designs, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see the company repeat that formula with its smartwatches. For Sony’s sake, though, here’s hoping it has a trick or two up its sleeve in terms of exclusive features.

The problem with this year’s smartwatches is that they lacked that certain something — a killer app, an innovative design, a must-have feature — to really ignite the public’s desire. Next year may be different, though, as reports suggest that a Nokia smartwatch slated for the latter half of 2014 will feature proprietary ‘Morph’ nanotechnology. If this truly is the case, all manufacturers will need to step up their game.

In Sony’s case, this will be particularly difficult; the company doesn’t have the brand recognition or cash reserves that Samsung does, so it needs to make every release count. Rumors suggest that Sony’s new smartwatch may make an appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January, though, so we’ll see what the company has planned then.
