New HTC Smartwatch Info Leaks

It’s been a big week for Taiwanese tech manufacturer HTC. Shortly after the company released an official reveal date, March 25, for its new flagship smartphone, details of its long-rumored smartwatch have surfaced. Currently just a prototype, the device is said to be the first of three planned wearable devices from HTC and will make an appearance at Mobile World Congress next week.

Despite the fact that it hasn’t even unofficially made an appearance yet, there’s still a fair amount of rumored information floating around about the smartwatch. For starters, Bloomberg has reported that the prototype will be based on Qualcomm’s Toq, itself a smartwatch prototype unveiled in December. This suggests that HTC’s as-yet-unnamed smartwatch may feature a Mirasol display.

Mirasol is Qualcomm’s own reflective display technology that offers a power advantage of up to six times over LCD and OLED displays. This is because, rather than using a backlight, Mirasol takes advantage of ambient light in the environment, making it able to stay on indefinitely without massively affecting the battery life of a device.

It’s also been reported that HTC’s smartwatch will boast wireless charging capabilities, as well as the ability to handle calls, music, calendar data and even text messaging, though to a limited extent.

If this all proves true, HTC should have a decent chance in the fledgling wearable tech space as it should be far more advanced that competing offerings from Sony and Samsung. Meanwhile, it will boast a color display while still being able to offer battery life that rivals the Pebble Smartwatch and its E Ink display. More importantly, it could lead to wider availability of Mirasol and similar low-power display technologies.

As for HTC’s other two wearable devices, the first is expected to leverage Google Now in a significant way, while the other is being described as an “electronic bracelet that plays music.”
