Samsung Gear S Supported on iPass

The competition taking place between mobile technology manufacturers is responsible for advancing this sector at an incredible pace. Whether it is established companies such as Apple, Samsung, Motorola and Nokia or new comer Xiaomi, new devices and applications are being introduced to improve the way we do virtually everything. As smartphones continue to achieve high saturation points around the world the same manufacturers are introducing new products in the marketplace.

Smart watches might not achieve the same penetration level as smartphones, but nevertheless the same players are going after the market with the same enthusiasm. The new Samsung Gear S, which has Wi-Fi capability, has been announced to be part of the 13 million hotspots around the world iPass provides.

New wearable devices such as the Samsung Gear S will have more features that allow them to communicate as a standalone product without requiring smartphone pairings. This means you will be able to talk on your wrist like Dick Tracy. The Gear S has 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1 and A-GPS along with an accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, heart rate monitor, ambient light, UV and barometric sensors.

As wearable devices become more sophisticated they will require the ability to transfer more data, and Wi-Fi will become more important.

The iPass Wi-Fi network covers more than 120 countries around the world and at the end of 2013, the company had over 1,300 enterprise customers, including 130 of the Fortune 500 providing connectivity for business travelers at hotspots in airports, airplanes, hotels and public areas.

The company's platform delivers secure authentication with a 128-bit encrypted connection that uses the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol and mutual key exchange between the various iPass platform components. When a customer logs on to the iPass Mobile Network, their credentials are passed over the Internet using the iPass protocol without compromising the username, password and other authentication characteristics.

The iPass Mobile Network is built to support a hub and spoke authentication architecture redundantly engineered to provide carrier-grade 99.999 percent availability with four globally distributed data centers to reduce authentication latency.

The iPass network includes:

  • 1.3 million unique users on the iPass mobility services platform in 2013
  • 12.4 million user authentications processed by iPass’ global infrastructure in 2013
  • 62 million iPass enabled Wi-Fi sessions in 2013
  • 158 global Wi-Fi operators with whom iPass’ authentication infrastructure is integrated
  • 74,670 strategic venues including hotel and conference venues and global airports
