Smartwatch Tracks Your Budget, Monitors Spending Habits

Having trouble sticking to a budget? Financial guru and news correspondent Nicole Lapin has a solution — the Cash smartwatch, which was developed to help users track their spending and stick to a budget. Users simply enter the amount they spend and categorize it, giving them a running total of their expenditures. If they go over budget, the smartwatch tells them.

For $139, the Cash smartwatch is a one-trick pony. You can’t access the Web or check email. However, Lapin said the point of this piece of wearable tech is to get people to think about impulse buying and make it easy to enter expenditures on the go. Users sync their watches with Lapin’s website, which makes data transfer easy. However, the smartwatch can work without the Web application as well.

The real value of the Cash smartwatch, however, may be Lapin’s financial advice, as her experience stems from her regular gigs as an expert money commentator on CNN, ABC News, Entertainment Tonight and major talk shows. She offers advice on how to budget appropriately, and the smartwatch offers both cautionary advice and positive feedback.

"When I graduated college and while I was growing up, I was too scared to talk about money," Lapin said. "It wasn't until I started working in TV that I had to teach myself everything about finance quickly. Learning about it is intimidating, but I wanted to be the Rosetta Stone for that — you don't have to know any of the jargon in order to budget and save."

Clearly intended for young women, the Cash smartwatch is also a fashion accessory, with three strap options — white faux crocodile skin, black silicone and a silver pattern. Options are available for men as well. The smartwatch also includes a stylus.

The Cash smartwatch will be available for purchase next week either online from Lapin’s website or via HSN.
