Olio: Defining the Future of Wearables

The wearable tech industry isn’t known for its fashion forward choices. Many wearable tech devices, bracelets, watches etc, are bulky rubbery, not something that adds to any outfit. While the Apple Watch has taken it up a notch with a more sleek design, they still aren’t the most attractive accessory.

Olio, a company that came out of hiding today announced that it has raised almost $4 million in seed funding, and claiming that they are creating wearables that are aesthetically pleasing.  Olio Devices is focused on “revolutionizing the classic wristwatch”.

A San Francisco-based company, Olio was founded in 2013 by Steve Jacobs. Olio also has a location in New York and has participated in Founders Den’s coworking space and entrepreneurship program. The company’s team includes people from fashion designers from Movado and back-end engineers from Box.

The company is led by Steve Jacobs, who is well known in the tech industry for his work with HP, Google, Amazon and as a former iPod/iPhone engineer, he hasn’t revealed much information about Olio’s future products.

While what specifically Olio is developing is being kept under wraps, Jacobs revealed to VentureBeat that it will be a cohesive inclusion of technology and fashion. Along with making its new products visually appealing, Olio is developing the software, hardware and a platform for third party services, although there is no word yet what third party will be latching on to Olio.

According to VentureBeat, Jacobs opened up about what Olio has been working on “We just want to make, first off, really well-made products, as opposed to try to stick a cellphone on your wrist,” Jacobs stated. “We aren’t only developing tools anymore. We’re enabling elements of self-expression to do things for us.”

Until the product is revealed later this year, we will just have to wait and see if Olio can revolutionize the appearance of smart devices.
