Microsoft Dives into Wearables

Microsoft has decided to stake its claim in the wearable tech market.  The company has recently announced that it is planning on launching its new wearable device within the next few weeks, according to Forbes. While the device is considered a smartwatch, it is mainly focused on fitness. The device is strategically set to become available to the public just in time for the holiday season- Microsoft even has a chance to beat Apple to the smartwatch market.

The smartwatch has been developed with engineering advice from Microsoft’s successful Kinect division. The smartwatch will be able to track user’s steps, monitor heart rate and document calories burned. Microsoft hopes that the heart rate will be able to be monitored day and night—this data collection is due to sensors embedded on the watch.

One thing that has really caught techies attention is the battery life. Microsoft expects the the final product to have a battery life that last two days. This is better than most of the smartwarches currently available. Android smartwatches and even Apple’s Watch typically only hold a charge for a single day. A longer lasting battery can give Microsoft a serious edge in the wearables market.

The smart device will be available for Windows Phone, Andriod and iOS. Each platform is said to have its own app, with unique support features and notifications for the band. This availability of the smart device on multiple platforms is cohesive with Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella’s idea of making products available “across all devices”. This cohesiveness allows Microsoft a larger target audience, in comparison to Apple- the Apple Watch is compatible with strictly iOS software.

The price and the name of this new technology is still unknown, but it’s rumored that Microsoft will soon unveil more information about its anticipated product.
