Apple and Nike Reportedly Teaming Up on New Wearable Device

With the wearable technology industry growing every day, it makes sense that Apple and Nike are teaming up in order to make a new device. Of course, both companies have already dipped their toes into the wearable device waters with mixed results. Nike launched its Fuel Band more than a year ago and eventually pulled support for the device earlier this year. Apple hasn’t launched anything yet, but the Apple Watch is set to hit store shelves sometime in early 2015. When the Cupertino-based company’s watch does make it to market, it’s expected to be quite popular.

It appears as if the partnership with Nike is a way for Apple to diversify itself a bit when it comes to this business sector. Reports are circulating that the two firms are working together to come up with a new “stylish” wearable tech device that will be less obvious and more “stealth.” Nike CEO Mark Parker says this new device will also have greater integration with existing gadgets.

The partnership between Apple and Nike especially makes sense when you take into account the fact where some of Nike’s brightest Fuel Band techs went when that project was shut down. After Nike had shuttered its previous wearable technology project, two of the company’s principal engineers moved over to Apple to work on the Apple Watch. During an interview with Bloomberg TV, Parker mentioned that his company had worked at length with Apple in the past, and this laid the groundwork for a productive partnership now. Tim Cook is very much on board with the project, as opposed to Steve Jobs, who was always luke warm to this kind of idea, according to Parker.

Having the Apple CEO fully behind the partnership is a big plus, according to Nike’s head man. What isn’t yet known is just what the partnership is going to yield. Most in the industry believe the two firms are getting set to launch something beyond a simple Nike app for the Apple Watch but know little beyond that.
