New Wearable Tech: Stridalyzer May Help with Preventing Running Injuries

Injuries are common when playing sports, especially with running because of the wear and tear on bones and muscles to perform the action. A study by the University of South Florida shows that 65 percent of all runners will actually see  an injury and that for every 100 hours of running, one person will sustain an injury. Furthermore, the study shows that common injuries include runner's knee, shin splints, achilles and ITB syndrome. Though many of these injuries occur to due to improper training, they nevertheless inhibit a person from running for pleasure or as a career.

One way to prevent these injuries is to foresee them. This forecasting is what an India-based company called ReTiSense has been working on. It is creating a product called Stridalyzer that can detect the susceptibility of runners to knee and foot injuries. The wearable tech is a smart insole that can be inserted in the shoes. When a person runs, this smart device will calculate the impact and pressure on the foot and the muscles being used by the runner. Using these numbers, Stridalyzer will then be able to predict the chances of injury more accurately. Other than forecasting injury, it can also keep track of distance covered and calories burned so that runners do not have to wear another device for getting these stats.

The idea to create such a product came from two avid runners, Anshuman Singh and Suvadeep Sarkar, who came together to create ReTiSense in Bangalore. While still in the prototype phase, the product is likely to reach crowdfunding sites by December of this year and depending on the funds collected, could be released sometime in 2015. It will also reportedly be used with a software application for iOS and Android platforms and possibly down the line even include a paid service with access to health and fitness experts.
