Wearable Tech Turning to the Fashion World for Pointers

While the technology is still pretty new, there are a number of companies viewing wearable technology as old news. In order to make the older new again, wearable tech is becoming a bit of an art form. The functionality of something like the Jawbone Up or the FitBit really can’t be denied. The fact that these devices stick out like a sore thumb can’t really be denied either. If someone sees you with a black or some other colored band on your wrist, they know right away what it is.

The fashion world appears to be trying to take the fact that wearable tech is here to stay and making it something that will actually be a plus that its standing out. One device in particular that takes what the Fitbit can do and make it a fashion statement as well is the MICA. Short for My Intelligent Communication Accessory, the MICA are wearable tech bracelets that are adorned in snakeskin and gemstones and will be shown off at high end stores like Barney’s. The tech inside is plenty good, being engineered by Intel but the outside makes this device look like the kind of bracelet you would wear to a night at the opera, instead of an afternoon at the gym.

Ringly Rings are another piece of wearable tech that are built to blend into your evening wear more than your workout clothes. The wearer links the Ringly Ring to their cell phones and then will get an alert through vibration on the ring when they get an email or text message. These little devices sell for anywhere between $195 and $260.

These kinds of devices clearly show that the wearable tech market isn’t going away. They also show that the market is far from set as far as how it wants to present itself. It’s possible this state of flux is why Apple has dragged its feet as long as it has when it comes to putting out its own piece of wearable tech. Will the market be changing to higher end pieces soon? All anyone can do at this point is guess.
