Those Planning on Purchasing Wearable Tech Numbers One in Five

There is no doubt that wearable devices are only getting more popular the farther we go into the 21st century. Just how much popular the technology is getting might surprise some. A new report indicates that nearly one in five (18 percent) of Americans are planning on purchasing a wearable device within the next year. With reports like that, it’s no wonder there are more wearable device companies popping up all the time.

The research report, conducted by Ipsos MediaCT says that the 18 percent of people who will probably or definitely purchase a wearable device in the next year pushes those who are likely to buy slightly ahead of those who are looking to buy other popular devices. The report also talked to people about other big time purchases in the near future such as streaming media devices, eReaders and 4K TVs. Wearable tech beat them all out, though streaming media devices are clearly getting more popular all the time as well, as 16 percent said they planned to buy a new one in the next year.

Considering the cost, those who planned to buy a 4K TV (10 percent) might be a surprisingly large number. “We have been tracking consumer attitudes and device adoption for quite some time, and are excited to share our market understanding about this latest category entrant,” Julia Roland, Vice President with Ipsos MediaCT said in a  recent release accompanying the report. “The findings indicate positive news for tech gear brands: we’re seeing robust consumer enthusiasm and promising sales potential across a range of product types.”

The wearable tech market could get a rather big boost in the very near future when Apple finally releases the Apple Watch. The Cupertino-based company has also been working with trendsetting firms such as Nike on other wearable devices that could be hitting the market sooner rather than later.
