Comings & Goings: Google Taps Tony Faddell as New Glass Project Head

There was a time when Google Glass was the device that literally everyone wanted. Then suddenly, it became a device that almost everyone forgot existed. One company hasn’t forgotten the wearable gadget existed and Google is going to work quite hard to make sure that the next iteration of Google Glass is a lot more memorable and a lot more popular.

Anyone who thought the company might be getting ready to just start ignoring its Glass invention was way off base apparently. The firm announced late last week that it is looking to make sure the project moves forward and thinks a new hire will go a long ways towards bringing greater success in the future. The Internet giant has tapped Tony Faddell to be the new lead of the project and Faddell has himself quite an impressive resume when it comes to the tech sector.

Those in the tech industry say Faddell played a huge part in helping Apple turn the iPod into a cultural icon and has a huge hand in smart home technology thanks to the design of his Nest thermostat. Google announced last Thursday that Faddell will be replacing Ivy Ross as head of the Google Glass project, though Ross will apparently be staying with the project and working directly under Faddell. This move seems to indicate that Google is going to be looking to make some rather big technical changes and advances. Ross, who was named the head of the project last year has a background in fashion and it was thought she was brought in to help make Google Glass “cooler.”

As of January 19, Google is no longer selling the initial version of Google Glass, which was always billed as something of a test case. The firm has said that a new and improved version of  the gadget is expected later this year. It appears that Faddell will be tasked with making sure the second version is the one that consumers can’t wait to get their hands on when it finally launches.
