NTT DoCoMo Unveils Smart Watch for Children

NTT DoCoMo, the Japanese mobile carrier, has announced a new smart watch that allows parents to track where their children are, according to Akihabara News.

The Dococchi 01 watch, which will be available in April, tracks ambient temperature, humidity and the wearer’s location. When the child strays a certain distance away, it will send a notification to the parent’s smartphone. The device can even determine whether the child is walking or resting.

The Huawei-manufactured device supports Bluetooth and GPS, as well as IPX5 waterproof and rustproof performance.

Children can also choose from several premade messages to send back to their parents, such as “I’m coming home soon.”

The watch will sync with up to six devices and will be available with either a light blue or a white color. NTT DoCoMo originally announced the device back in October for its winter and spring rollout. The watches in both colors will be available early next month, though the price is not yet available.

The new device continues Japan’s innovations in mobile technology. Many mobile features that have become common in the West, such as phone cameras, mobile Internet and text messaging, became popular in Japan first.

If the product sells well in Japan, it might join the ranks of mobile technologies that have found a market in the West, which is just as safety-minded about children as Japanese parents seem to be.

It’s not the only safety-related mobile technology that NTT DoCoMo is currently working on. With memories of the 2011 earthquake and tsunami still fresh in people’s minds, NTT announced earlier this month that it was developing a multilingual app that would notify users of impending disasters in English, Chinese, Portuguese, Korean and Spanish.

The new watch could possibly receive these warnings as well as soon as the system is rolled out.
