ABI Research Gets Look Inside Apple Watch

With wearable tech only getting more impressive and more popular all the time, it’s not surprising that people are wanting to get a look inside the Apple Watch. Finally people are getting their wish as ABI Research’s TeardownIQ reveals a number of things including the design that is centered around the Apple Watch’s customer processor. This device has been revealed to among other things, offer Broadcom Dialog PMU as well as an NFC controller and NFC booster connectivity.

“The design is an obvious variation from Apple’s smartphones, with many high-end functions/chips included that normally would not be found in a simple watch,” Jim Mielke, VP Engineering at ABI Research and head of the TeardownIQ group said in a recent statement.

Mielke went on to say that judging by the complexity of the PCB and the number of parts included, there are some who might look at it as a fully connected cellular watch. The reality is that the connectivity is limited to Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and NFC. Other surprises once the team got a look inside was a two touch controller design for ADI and the IDT wireless charging receiver. All in all, the teardown seems to indicate that the Apple Watch is indeed quite intricate in the way it was put together. There appear to be a few things in the build that could lead to upgrades without needing a release in the near future. One has to wonder whether or not the build of the Apple Watch is one that won’t be refreshed the same way the iPad and iPhone are done on a near yearly pace.

The Apple Watch has enough power in it that Apple could decide to simply release OS upgrades that will take advantage of some of the features without needing to bring a whole new design to market.
