Lycos Launches Wearable Devices

Those who have been surfing the Web for a while will likely remember the Web portal, Lycos. There was a time the company was one of the most successful in the world, long before Bing or Google or Yahoo were the powers they are today. Since those other search engines began to rule the Internet, Lycos has seen some serious struggles.

Now the company is trying to make a comeback as a completely reimagined entity. For starters, Lycos is launching some wearable tech including an activity tracker and a “smart” ring that is geared toward mobile payments.

Rebranded as Lycos Life, the company is launching what it calls a “data-driven ecosystem of products for consumers.” Part of this new endeavor is the wearables but the company is also looking at things like home security devices. All of the devices that are released under this roof will be designed to work together. Of course, it might take a little bit of time in order for Lycos to get everything up and running. For now, the Lycos Ring is something that is actually fairly simplistic. The ring has two NFC chops in it that are geared toward letting people do things like unlock their Android phone and share contact information.

You’ll note I said Android phone because right now the device isn’t compatible with iOS. Lycos has said that new features are going to be coming to the ring in the near future, and that its devices will have iOS support later this year.

The activity tracker, on the other hand is a wristband that comes with a digital clock face. This band comes with the ability to track sleep as well as your heartrate. The life ring is currently being sold for $60 and the activity tracker has an MSRP of $125.
