Somnology Developing a Comprehensive Sleep Tracking Wearable

The wearable technology market is getting bigger and more popular. The problem for some companies is that there are limits when it comes to the different functions current wearable technology can offer. While there aren’t a ton of new features, some companies are finding ways to improve upon existing technology. One of them is Somnology, which is working to enhance sleep tracking.

Somnology is working on bringing a new sleep tracker—called the Plex Sleep Scanner—to market, and they are doing it without the benefit of big corporate funding. The company is working through Indiegogo to fund and develop a tracker that uses medical-grade sensors to capture sleep behaviors as well as breathing patterns, pulse and oxygen levels during a user’s sleep.

The Plex is a bit bigger than what people are likely used to when it comes to wearable technology. In order to get all of these readings, the device has to go around the waist of the user, rather than work as something that can be worn as a bracelet. After a night of sleep wearing this technology the Plex device can generate reports that are far more detailed than what people are used to seeing thanks to an integrated application called the MobileSleepDoc Pro.

This data is certainly something that will be usable by the wearer but even better, it can be used by that user’s doctor. This isn’t simply a device that will tell someone when they went into REM sleep or how many times they woke up in the middle of the night. This data can go a long way toward finding medical problems that might be affecting sleep.

This device is not exactly cheap, though. The company is offering them up at $259 a pop and users can actually register for a package that costs as much as $807. So far the project to get the Plex Sleep Scanner off the ground is in the early stages, but appears promising.
